Halting Deforestation - Player funding will help Cool Earth continue their partnership with local communities to protect their environments.
Players of People's Postcode Lottery have helped to raise £300,000 for rainforest charity Cool Earth. The award will help the charity to continue its work alongside rainforest communities, to halt deforestation and its impact on climate change.
Matthew Owen, Director of Cool Earth, said, "People's Postcode Lottery is the sort of funder that Non-Governmental Organisations dream of and it's this support from players that makes Cool Earth a better charity. We can continue to protect precious rainforest in Amazonia, the Congo and Oceania and work closely with local communities to save lives and trees."
Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People's Postcode Lottery, said, "We are delighted that funding from players of People's Postcode Lottery will help Cool Earth to scale up its work, reaching more communities and empowering them to protect their natural environment."
The initial funding will go towards Cool Earth's partnerships in Papua New Guinea, where palm oil is one of the biggest threats to the rainforests.
Papua New Guinea is a country of incredible diversity, where over 1,000 languages are spoken. Over three quarters of the country is covered in the world's third-largest rainforest, sheltering more undiscovered species than anywhere on earth. It is also poised on the brink of disaster. Once replaced with a palm plantation, there is no chance for the forest. Matthew continued, "Of all the drivers of deforestation, palm oil is the worst. An ecosystem that has taken millions of years to evolve is destroyed in a matter of days."
Situated in Milne Bay province in eastern Papua New Guinea, Cool Earth is working alongside villages of Gadaisu, Godidi, Wabumari and Kaifouna. These villages are positioned on the west of the advancing palm frontier and are strategically placed to shield the pristine rainforest behind.
Matthew said, "Cool Earth is aiming to achieve zero deforestation within the partnership areas in Papua New Guinea and to double community incomes. We will use the same light touch, community-led approach that has so far protected over a million acres of rainforest. With the help of our indigenous partners and supporters like People's Postcode Lottery we will do it."Read more about Cool Earth
